“Jeopardy” show host Alex Trebek was injured Wednesday morning after he chased after a woman who tried to burglarize his Downtown San Francisco hotel room.
Trebek, who was in the Bay Area to host the National Geographic World Championship event at Google’s Mountain View campus, told reporters that he ruptured his Achilles tendon and fell on the hotel room floor while chasing the burglar. Trebek said he injured his other leg during the fall.
The veteran game show host was seen using crutches during the Championship competition later this morning.
San Francisco Police said hotel security officers apprehended the burglar identified as Lucinda Moyers, 56, of San Francisco. Authorities said she broke into Trebek’s hotel room at 2:30 a.m. and stole “several items” including a purse, and Trebek’s wallet, according to a police spokesperson.
Authorities declined to identify the hotel or victim in the burglary case. The Beat has learned that the burglary occurred at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis hotel at Fourth and Mission Streets.
Moyers was not a guest at the hotel, authorities said. She has been booked into San Francisco County Jail for felony possession of stolen goods, police said.
Trebek told reporters at the competition that he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair his Achilles tendon later this week.
