PARIS — Qatar Airways said Monday it hopes to be the first operator of Boeing’s new composite-wing twin-aisle 777-8X jet after the airline announced it would order 10 of them on the first day of the 2015 Paris Air Show at Le Bourget.

The airline and Boeing also announced an order for 4 Boeing 777 freighters that will fly for Qatar’s air cargo division.

The order is estimated to be worth $4.8 billion at list prices. Qatar already has 50 of the larger 777-9X variant on order.

Boeing said production of the next-generation 777X will begin in 2017.
