The Bay Area
SAN MATEO, CALIF – From May 20 to May 22, the San Mateo Event Center became a temporary Mecca for makers: nerds, builders, hackers and geeks alike.
For the price of admission, visitors get to experience everything from fire-breathing metal dragons, to drone racing and video games. This is not a faire to be watched from afar, as nearly every exhibit is interactive; attendees are just as much a part of the faire as the exhibitors.
OAKLAND, CALIF. — The launch for Norwegian Air Shuttle’s latest flight from Europe to North America came with a message from the company aimed directly at budget-conscious fliers and the airline industry: we’re not done expanding.
The low-cost international carrier began serving Oakland, California from London’s Gatwick Airport May 12.
SAN JOSE, CALIF. — Cheers, applause and a British-themed celebration marked the launch of a long-sought non-stop flight between Silicon Valley and London on British Airways Wednesday evening.
“Not since the Beatles landed on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ has a British invasion had a greater impact on the United States of America than today,” quipped San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo as he welcomed the airline Wednesday.
Amid rumors it may be interested in buying Burlingame-based airline Virgin America, JetBlue is aggressively expanding its popular premium “Mint” product to flights from Boston’s Logan Airport to San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Last week, New York City-based JetBlue began flying one of its three daily Boston-San Francisco flights using a Mint-configured Airbus A321 aircraft. The two other frequencies will be flown by Mint planes by Fall 2016.
Superheroes, celebrities and the naked came out to San Francisco’s colorful Bay to Breakers footrace Sunday morning. The sun may not have made an appearance during the duration of the 12K event, but it did not stop some partiers from celebrating in their skivvies.

In the ever-so-stressful world of airline travel, British Airways has launched a new program to put the minds of its long-haul passengers at ease.
The man to help make it happen: Mark Coleman, a San Francisco-based mindfulness consultant who’s been asked by the airline to provide fliers on its newest Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets with meditation techniques for a relaxed and positive state of mind.
In the highly competitive fight to win marketshare on the San Francisco to London route, British Airways may hold a key none of its competitors currently have: the world’s largest passenger jet.
The airline began flying its double-deck Airbus A380 between the two cities Sunday, a move British Airways officials said was done in response to increased travel demand from the booming technology sector in the Bay Area and in Great Britain.
FBI agents arrested 20 people Wednesday — including state Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) and notorious gangster Raymond “Shrimp Boy” Chow — as part of a sweeping organized crime probe including allegations of arms trafficking, bribery, drug dealing, receiving stolen goods and money laundering.
Yee — charged with arms dealing and six counts of wire fraud in connection with soliciting campaign donations in exchange for political and official favors — could face decades in federal prison if convicted.
