A United Airlines flight bound for Kansai, Japan returned to San Francisco International Airport Friday evening after a passenger suffered a medical emergency mid-flight.

United Airlines Flight 885 departed SFO shortly before noon when the Boeing 777 made an unexpected U-turn over the Pacific Ocean 2.5 hours into the trip after the passenger fell ill.

(6/17) — UPDATE 2241 PDT — SAN FRANCISCO — A “computer outage” forced United Airlines to delay or cancel hundreds of flights system wide for hours Friday evening, stranding tens of thousands of travelers from coast-to-coast.

The airline’s computer system slowly came back online by 10 p.m., nearly 5 hours after the outage grounded most of its departures.

A report of smoke delayed BART service through the Transbay Tube, BART passengers said Sunday morning.

Passengers said they received an announcement from train operators  at 8:45 a.m about a small fire that was producing smoke in the eastbound bore of the Transbay Tube.

Crisis negotiators from the San Francisco Police Department and California Highway Patrol successfully detained a man who threatened to jump from the upper deck of the Bay Bridge Saturday afternoon.

The CHP closed the two right lanes of the upper deck while negotiators attempted to get the person to climb back onto the road deck after he climbed onto the ledge of the bridge at 2:45 p.m. The left lane of the lower deck of the bridge was also closed by the CHP, a witness told the Beat.

Outer Sunset commuters in San Francisco who have grown accustomed to crowded cars and long delays aboard the N-Judah MUNI Metro streetcar line can expect some relief come June 13 — for a six-month trial period — in the form of a bus.

MUNI will begin a pilot project to increase capacity on the busy Metro line during weekday commute hours by instituting an N-Judah Express bus line, which the transit agency says will relieve severe overcrowding.

A mechanical problem on the outbound tracks near the Van Ness Avenue MUNI Metro station contributed to delays of at least 20 minutes for commuters Wednesday afternoon.

Passengers in the MUNI Metro subway complained of persistent delays for all outbound Metro trains because of a problem on a streetcar that began after 5 p.m. west of Van Ness station.

The National Transportation Safety Board has faulted a MUNI Metro operator for colliding his train into another stopped streetcar at the West Portal Station in 2009, injuring 48 people.

The Board released findings from a federal investigation into the July 18 rail accident, blaming the operator of the L-Taraval streetcar for switching his train from automatic to manual mode without approval from MUNI’s Central Control.

BART service at Rockridge Station was temporarily halted after a passenger ended up on the track of an oncoming train and was run over Tuesday night.

The man, described by witnesses as a middle-aged white male, was transported to the hospital after Oakland firefighters freed him from the underside of a Pittsburg/ Bay Point-bound train shortly after 10 p.m.
