Crisis negotiators from the San Francisco Police Department and California Highway Patrol successfully detained a man who threatened to jump from the upper deck of the Bay Bridge Saturday afternoon.

The CHP closed the two right lanes of the upper deck while negotiators attempted to get the person to climb back onto the road deck after he climbed onto the ledge of the bridge at 2:45 p.m. The left lane of the lower deck of the bridge was also closed by the CHP, a witness told the Beat.

A distraught man who said he was suffering from marital problems threatened to explode a car-load of explosives and leap from the upper deck of the Bay Bridge Thursday morning, forcing a two-hour shut down of the upper deck.

The man, identified by the California Highway Patrol as a Antioch-resident in his 50s, stopped his black SUV on the suspension portion of the bridge at 7:30 a.m. and threatened authorities, who forced a hard closure of the bridge at the peak of the morning commute.

Is there a such thing as sticker-shock at the toll booth? On Thursday, Bay Area drivers will find out.

Tolls on all seven state-owned bridges in the Bay Area will go up today, and for the first time since the mid-1970s, carpoolers on all bridges (including the Golden Gate Bridge) will be required to pay too.

A Hayward man in his 50s hauling a container of Asian pears across the upper deck of the Bay Bridge during the early morning hours Monday became the first fatality stemming from the troublesome bypass curve installed over the Labor Day weekend.

The Bay Bridge — the reason for many commuters’ angst and extended travel times for the past 6 days — reopened Monday morning.

A marathon construction and inspection effort by engineers and bridge safety officials to ensure that the replacement to a failed repair for a cracked eyebar would withstand vibrations that brought down the initial fix that went into place during the Labor Day weekend passed muster Monday morning, allowing Caltrans to give the go ahead to allow vehicles back onto the 73-year old span around 9:00 a.m.

Caltrans said Sunday afternoon that a setback to emergency repairs to replace a broken part of the eyebar reinforcement installed over Labor Day weekend meant that the bridge would not reopen for the Monday morning commute.

Caltrans spokesperson Bart Ney said that a stress test overnight Saturday revealed that metal-on-metal contact responsible for the failure had not been eliminated, requiring modifications.

Ney did not give an estimated time of reopening, saying that he didn’t “want to make a false prediction.”

Caltrans said Friday afternoon that emergency repairs to replace a broken part of the eyebar reinforcement installed over Labor Day weekend would “go into the weekend” and that the bridge would not be open for the Friday afternoon commute.

Caltrans spokesperson Bart Ney said that repair work was still ongoing and could not give an estimated time of reopening, even leaving open the possibility that the bridge might not open in time for the Monday morning commute.

There was a lot of teeth gnashing Wednesday.

Everyone did it: the guy stuck in that 10-mile long back-up trying to get across the Golden Gate Bridge, the woman crammed into a packed BART train next to the kid with bad B.O., and the folks at Caltrans wondering just how a brace installed over the Labor Day weekend to repair a cracked eyebar simply fell apart.

The Bay Area limped along without the Bay Bridge.

Caltrans said Wednesday afternoon that it still did not know when emergency repairs to replace a broken part of the eyebar reinforcement installed over Labor Day weekend would be completed.

Spokesperson Bart Ney said that the bridge would continue to be closed through the Wednesday evening commute, and most likely through the Thursday evening commute as well.

Caltrans and construction contractor officials had hinted this afternoon that, barring complications, the Bay Bridge could be reopened to traffic sometime Thursday.
