The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office revealed Thursday the Seattle man believed to have been shot and killed by two police officers in the Bayview District over the weekend likely died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
An autopsy concluded that the bullet lodged in the skull of Kenneth Harding Jr., 19, was fired from a gun that was not issued to the police officers who confronted the Washington State parolee during a MUNI Metro fare inspection Saturday afternoon.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit District reached a settlement Tuesday morning with the mother of Oscar Grant, the 22-year-old unarmed train passenger shot and killed by a former BART police officer in 2009.
As part of the settlement, the District will pay $1.3 million to Wanda Johnson, Grant’s mother, the district announced in a statement.

A four-alarm fire is burning inside a South of Market Area hotel at 1040 Folsom Street near Eighth Street, a fire dispatcher said.
The blaze began inside the Park Hotel at 6 p.m. and quickly engulfed the top floors of the building, witnesses said.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Northern and Central California coast, including the San Francisco area, after a magnitude-8.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan.
The National Weather Service’s West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says the waves are projected to reach San Francisco at 8:08 a.m. Friday. The tsunami is expected to peak between 1.5 and 3 feet along the Pacific coast near the Bay Area, with waves projected to reach more than 7 feet near Crescent City, California.

BART trains were single-tracking through the Transbay Tube Sunday evening after a report of smoke in the tunnel briefly halted service in both directions, according to the transit agency.
Train service is currently operating through the San Francisco-bound track underneath the bay. The process only allows one train to be in the tube at once, causing 10-minute delays for passengers travelling to and from San Francisco.

Democratic and Republican state legislative leaders and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Friday that they have reached an agreement on closing the state’s budget deficit, estimated at more than $19 billion in the current fiscal year.
The deal ends a standoff on a budget that is already 93 days late — the latest in state history.

(7/8) — UPDATED 19:31 PDT — LOS ANGELES — Johannes Mehserle, the former BART Police Officer who shot and killed unarmed passenger Oscar Grant on January 1, 2009 at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a Los Angeles jury.
The jury found Mehserle not guilty of the most serious charge he faced: murder. The verdict means Mehserle will face from five to 14 years in state prison for Grant’s death.
