(7/6) — UPDATED 10:50 PDT — LOS ANGELES – The jury weighing second-degree murder charges against Johannes Mehserle, the former BART police officer who fatally shot Oscar Grant, will delay its first full day of deliberations because one juror is ill.

(6/29) — 11:22 PDT — LOS ANGELES — The defense rested its case this morning in the murder trial for former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle, who fatally shot unarmed passenger Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day 2009.
The prosecution, which contends Mehserle intentionally pulled his gun to shoot Grant, is expected to begin its rebuttal this afternoon. Closing arguments are scheduled for Thursday and the jury could begin its deliberations as early as Friday.

(5/24) 18:45 PDT — UPDATE: The disabled BART train has been towed back to the Daly City yard and is no longer blocking tracks. Trains are proceeding through the Peninsula and SF, but the agency says residual delays will persist into the evening.

Two hundred protesters are on the move from the Embarcadero BART Station heading towards Montgomery BART Station in Downtown San Francisco at this hour demonstrating against police violence and asking the transit agency to fire BART Police Officer Tony Pirone, who was on the Fruitvale Station platform on New Year’s Day 2009 when former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle shot and killed passenger Oscar Grant.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced this afternoon that he is dropping out of the California governor’s race, a move that stunned political observers around the state.
In a statement issued today, Newsom wrote that “With a young family and responsibilities at city hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to and should be done.”
But Newsom’s widely documented fundraising difficulties and difficulty gaining traction in the polls may also have contributed to his early exit.

Fleet Week organizers have canceled Saturday’s Parade of Ships ceremony because two Naval Ships that were slated to appear in the 11:30 a.m. event on San Francisco Bay have been delayed due to unfavorable sea conditions that set them behind schedule, the San Francisco Chronicle reported this evening.
The Chronicle reported that the two U.S. Naval ships – the the assault carrier Bonhomme Richard and the frigate Pinkney – will arrive in San Francisco Bay early Sunday morning instead. A mini-ceremony featuring the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien and Coast Guard cutter Bertholf will take place in lieu of tomorrow’s grand affair with all four ships.
The Air Show led by Team Oracle stunt pilots and the Canadian Force’s Snowbirds will continue as planned tomorrow starting at 12:30 p.m. The Blue Angels will fly from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
