(6/13) — UPDATE 0720 PDT — LOS ANGELES — Johannes Mehserle, the former Bay Area Rapid Transit Police officer who was caught on video shooting and killing an unarmed train passenger, was released from the Los Angeles County Men’s Jail early Monday morning.

Mehserle left the Downtown Los Angeles facility after serving 11 months behind bars for an involuntary manslaughter conviction for the killing of Hayward resident Oscar Grant.

Several community groups said Wednesday they would hold protests on the day that former Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Officer Johannes Mehserle is released from a Los Angeles County jail.

Mehserle shot and killed unarmed train passenger Oscar Grant on January 1, 2009 in an infamous incident that was caught by cell phone cameras and ultimately led to his conviction of involuntary manslaughter by a Los Angeles jury.

One of the two men suspected of critically beating a San Francisco Giants fan at Dodger Stadium on March 31 has been arrested, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday morning.

The Times reported that a Los Angeles Police SWAT team conducted an early morning raid at an East Hollywood apartment complex where a man matching the description of one of the individuals suspected of beating 42 year-old Santa Cruz resident Bryan Stow was taken into custody by officers.

LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles County Supervisor is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrests of two men who critically beat a San Francisco Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium Thursday night.

Bryan Stow, 42, of Santa Cruz was leaving the stadium after the team’s season opener against the archrival Los Angeles Dodgers when he was assaulted by two Latino men in their late teens or 20s, police said.

LOS ANGELES — Police have released sketches of the two men believed to be responsible for severely beating a San Francisco Giants fan after a baseball game at Dodger Stadium Thursday night.

Bryan Stow, 41, of Santa Cruz remained in critical condition at a Los Angeles hospital after he was attacked by the men, who wore Dodgers fan apparel, after the Giants’ 2-1 loss to the rival team on the opening day of the 2011 regular season.

LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles judge denied bail to former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle at a hearing Friday afternoon, dismissing a defense motion that sought the release of the former transit officer from jail pending an appeal of his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

“This court sincerely believes [Mehserle's conviction] will not be reversed” on appeal, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Perry explained.

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris will become the next Attorney General of California after winning one of the closest statewide races in recent memory.

As of Wednesday evening, she leads her Republican opponent, Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley, by nearly 60,000 votes.

Cooley conceded the race Wednesday morning, with a spokesman for the Cooley campaign saying Cooley telephoned Harris to congratulate her on the victory.

LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge sentenced former BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle to two years in state prison Friday for the killing of unarmed train passenger Oscar Grant in 2009.

He will get 292 days of credit for time served and good behavior, which could translate to a prison sentence of a little more than a year for the former police officer. It’s possible Mehserle could be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence — slightly more than seven months.

The response in Los Angeles to the involuntary manslaughter conviction of former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle was largely peaceful.

Mehserle was charged with second degree murder by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for fatally shooting unarmed BART passenger Oscar Grant last year, but after six and a half hours of deliberation the jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter Thursday.
