Puppies and kittens are striking a pose for holiday shoppers at Macy’s Union Square during the holiday shopping season as part of the San Francisco SPCA’s adoption event to find homes for the shelter’s cats and dogs.

As predicted when this year’s window display was unveiled earlier this month, it’s another big hit.

The sights and spirit of the holiday season greeted thousands of people who watched Macy’s 2012 Christmas tree light up Friday evening at San Francisco’s Union Square.

The 83-foot tree has been decorated with 33,000 energy-efficient LED bulbs from top to bottom. The tree itself isn’t real — it’s reusable.

Like the Christmas tree in the center of Union Square or the lights at Embarcadero Center, the sight of adorable puppies and kittens has become synonymous with the holiday spirit in San Francisco.

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown did the honors to unveil this year’s SPCA holiday pet adoption display at the Macy’s department store Friday afternoon in front of a crowd of spectators who wanted to be among the first to say hello to the animals.

A prominent display that will hopefully find homes for San Francisco’s homeless cats and dogs this holiday season will be unveiled Friday.

Macy’s and the San Francisco SPCA will pull back the curtains on its 2012 holiday windows display at the department store chain’s Union Square location during a 5 p.m. ceremony at the corner of Stockton and O’Farrell Streets.

An effort to relocate underground utilities along a portion of Stockton Street along San Francisco’s Union Square could tie up traffic in the area for months to come, project managers are warning.

A three-block portion of the street, from Post to Ellis Streets, is being dug up by contractors in phases to relocate below-street utility boxes and other equipment away from the path of subway tunnels and an underground station at Union Square.

Kittens purring and puppies barking can be grouped into the sounds of the holiday season at San Francisco’s Macy’s store. The annual display of pets up for adoption from the city’s SPCA is stopping brisk-walking holiday shoppers and drawing them to window displays featuring the animals who are in need of a home along Stockton and O’Farrell Streets.

This season’s display is the 24th annual campaign at the San Francisco Macy’s store to raise money for the SPCA and find homes for dogs and cats every year.

Despite an economic downturn, the final weekend before Christmas was quite busy in San Francisco, at least activity-wise it was. On Friday night, the annual lighted boat parade wowed those who braved the chilly weather along the Aquatic Park pier and Marina Green to see yachts and other private vessels sail by. At Ghirardelli Square, carolers sang Christmas hymns in front of the Christmas tree there.  Down at Union Square in San Francisco, the ice rink was full of skaters zipping past spectators on the sidelines. Shoppers flooded the nearby Macy’s store and crowded window-fronts to see the San Francisco SPCA’s kittens and puppies up for adoption this holiday season.
