(7/13) — UPDATED 17:45 PDT — OAKLAND — Mayor Ron Dellums announced Tuesday afternoon that after continued negotiations, Oakland officials and police union leaders were unable to reach a last-minute agreement to avoid the layoffs of 80 police officers.

The two sides met well into Monday night and continued their discussions behind closed doors today to try and hammer out a compromise as the 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline loomed.

OAKLAND – The union representing BART’s train operators and station agents rejected the agency’s latest contract proposal Monday night in a surprising move that shattered union leaders’ and district managements’ hopes that a negotiated labor deal would finally be reached.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 voted down the deal 406 to 224 during a day-long voting session that brought in about 70 percent of union membership Monday. The defeat signified just how fragile the negotiated contract was and brings talks back to square one with the growing possibility that BART workers could walk off the job.

Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 — the labor union representing BART’s train operators and other personnel — passed a strike authorization vote Tuesday evening, as Bay Area transportation officials started sounding alarm bells warning commuters that the region could come to a standstill as early as next Wednesday if BART employees walk off the job after their current contract expires on June 30 and a new one isn’t ratified.

ATU members spent much of Tuesday evening casting ballots at their Oakland union hall. Putting the possibility of a strike on the bargaining table would give ATU and other BART employee unions much more leverage in securing a contract to their liking with the agency. Union heads said 98 or 99 percent of the votes were in support of a potential strike if labor negotiations crumbled further.
