Thousands of protesters joined a general strike called by the Occupy Oakland movement Wednesday, with marches and rallies occurring in Downtown Oakland throughout the day, and an evening blockade of the Port of Oakland shutting down commerce at the freight terminal for the rest of the day.

On a 22-hour visit to the Bay Area, President Barack Obama fielded questions from Facebook employees and online viewers during an unprecendented online town hall meeting at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto Wednesday afternoon, then visited two San Francisco events expected to raise more than $3.9 million for Democratic campaign efforts.

A three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in San Francisco today on the question of whether a lower court ruling that California’s voter-approved ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional should be allowed to stand.

The two-and-a-half hour hearing was televised live nationwide on C-SPAN, affording viewers a rare chance to watch the judges pressing both sides on questions such as whether Proposition 8 has any rational basis.

Democrats Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer defied the red tide that swept Republicans into office nationwide Tuesday, winning the hotly contested California gubernatorial and Senate races over well-funded Republican opponents.

Meanwhile, voters sent Proposition 19, the measure to legalize marijuana, up in a cloud of smoke, defeating it 53-46, but backed a measure to eliminate the two-thirds requirement for passing a state budget.

There are several street closures still in effect, including Skyline Blvd. between San Bruno Ave. and Sneath Lane, and the San Bruno Ave. and Skyline Blvd. offramps from Highway 280.

Johannes Mehserle, the former BART Police Officer who shot and killed unarmed passenger Oscar Grant on January 1, 2009 at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a Los Angeles jury.

The jury found Mehserle not guilty of the most serious charge he faced: murder. Mehserle faces five to 14 years in state prison for Grant’s killing.
