Johannes Mehserle, the former BART Police Officer who shot and killed unarmed passenger Oscar Grant on January 1, 2009 at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a Los Angeles jury.

The jury found Mehserle not guilty of the most serious charge he faced: murder. Mehserle faces five to 14 years in state prison for Grant’s killing.

As a city attempts to come to grips with the shocking killings of four Oakland Police officers, the violent incident is touching off a loud debate between a grief-stricken community and others concerned about the relationship between Oaklanders and law enforcement.

Relations between police and the predominately African-American residents in the gritty neighborhood along the MacArthur Blvd. corridor haven’t been good for decades. Mistrust of officers, community contempt and allegations of brutality voiced by residents at the crime scenes Saturday afternoon have long plagued the Oakland Police Department’s efforts at quelling soaring crime rates in the area.

Sympathy and an outpouring of condolences flooded Oakland Police headquarters Saturday evening — hours after three police sergeants were killed and doubt lingered about whether a fourth gravely injured officer would survive.

It marked the highest number of police officers ever killed in the line duty on the same day in Oakland.
