Berkeley cops nab BB-gun attackers near People’s Park

Police in Berkeley arrested three people for shooting a 22 year-old man three times with a BB gun near People’s Park Sunday afternoon.

The victim, a white male who was not a UC Berkeley student, was standing at the corner of Haste St. and Telegraph Avenue at around 2 p.m. when he was approached by three men who yelled a racial slur at him, University of California Police reported.

The men surrounded the victim and raised their fists, police said. The victim escaped before he was physically assaulted by running away from the group toward’s People’s Park.

UC Police said one of the men, Michael-James Kifayat Ali, 22, pulled out a toy BB-gun and shot the fleeing victim three times in the back. Ali and his two unidentified companions, 16 and 17 year-old males, fled on foot but were later apprehended by UC and Berkeley Police officers. Their names were not released because of they are juveniles.

Witnesses identified the trio as the attackers in the assault, police reported.

The victim was not injured in the attack.
