United flight from SFO to Japan diverted after medical emergency

A United Airlines flight bound for Kansai, Japan returned to San Francisco International Airport Friday evening after a passenger suffered a medical emergency mid-flight.

United Airlines Flight 885 departed SFO shortly before noon when the Boeing 777 made an unexpected U-turn over the Pacific Ocean 2.5 hours into the trip after the passenger fell ill.

The flight returned to San Francisco at 5:57 p.m. so the passenger could receive medical treatment. His condition was unknown, but other passengers said he was an elderly man in his mid-60s.

The passengers on the diverted flight were indefinitely delayed, and it was unclear whether they would be rebooked on another flight after the airline suffered a major computer outage Friday evening snarling travel from coast-to-coast.
