A minor earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale shook parts of the Bay Area Saturday afternoon, the US Geological Survey reported.

A USGS reading of the 7:04 p.m. quake put the epicenter 2 miles southeast of Hercules in Contra Costa County.

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. — Tsunami waves touched off by a massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan reached the western shores of the mainland United States Friday morning with destructive consequences.

One person was confirmed dead after being swept out to sea at the Klamath River near the Crescent City, Calif. harbor when the waves reached the town, located south of the California-Oregon border.

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties, as well as in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties on the northern California coast. The declaration makes state and federal funds available to assist with disaster recovery.

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a major 6.9 magnitude temblor that shook the entire San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.

The earthquake leveled buildings – particularly in Downtown Santa Cruz and San Francisco’s Marina District — and brought down sections of the Bay Bridge and the Cypress freeway in Oakland.

The California mission system is perhaps the best known survivor of the Spanish period of the state’s history. However in retrospect, few people know the names and locations of all twenty-one of them. Of course there are the well known ones like those in Carmel and San Francisco, but what about the others?

Tucked away in the city of Fremont stands one of these lesser known missions — Mission San Jose.
